Ionization is the process where an atom loses an electron. The atom’s core contains neutrons and protons. The neutrons are neutrally charged, the protons are positively charged. The core is therefore positively charged. A complete atom however, is neutral, caused by the negatively charged electrons circulating its core. The electrons’ mass is much smaller than that of the protons or neutrons. And yet it takes the same amount of protons and electrons to discharge the atom. Because an electron is just as much negatively charged as the proton is positively charged. An atom will get a positive charge when the electron loses it. A charged atom is called an ion and the atom then is ionized. If the atom has lost two electrons we call the atom twice ionized. Our atmosphere is always filled with positive and negative ions. Ions are molecules that lack an electron or have one too many. A surplus of positive ions in the atmosphere could be a major cause of many health problems and nutritional diseases.
Positive ions enter our atmosphere because of:
- Addition of certain chemical substances such as barium salt
- Various types of radiation
- Events in our solar system (sun eruptions, positions of the moon etc.)
Negative ions are becoming less and less numerous as the conditions that create negative ions are very much limited by human activities.
In our atmosphere an average of 1,500 to 4,000 ions can be measured per cubic centimetre (cm3). The earth itself is negatively charged causing rejection of negative ions. This rejection creates a certain balance between negative and positive ions in a ratio of respectively 10 to 12.
A surplus of positive ions or lack of negative ions cause the so-called serotonin hyper function syndrome or irritation syndrome (SIS), which entails insomnia, irritation, tension or stress, migraine, nausea, heart fluttering, hot flashes combined with shivering or sweating, tremors and dizziness. Elderly people suffer from depressions, listlessness and extreme fatigue. Breathing in positively ionized air can also lead to irritation of the airways. Ailments such as asthma, bronchitis, hay fever but also rheumatism and other chronic pains will be intensified; the same effects that indicate a surplus of serotonin. Other than problems with the bronchial tubes there will also be itching eyes, dry throat, trouble with swallowing, dizziness, clogged nose, dry skin, migraine etc. Can it be that positive ions are responsible for releasing serotonin in the body? Research confirms this. Apparently many of the positive ions enter the blood stream via the lungs when inhaling air. In the blood stream they separate serotonin from the red blood platelets.
Nowadays depressions are mostly treated with medication that block the absorption of serotonin, such as Prozac and Zoloft. Because a depression is a symptom of a lack of negative ions or a surplus of positive ions, it would be possible to get a negative ion therapy instead of medication. You also have the possibility to purchase an ionizer. Below you will find a table with percentages of people who have benefited from getting an ionizer or air purifier.
||No statement / (not) yet identified|
|* The sum is more than 100%, because the individual buyers purchased the ionizer for more than 1 reason.|
|Mucous membrane inflammation
|Nasal cavity inflammation
|Other chronic headaches
or psychiatric diseases
(or joint inflammation)
Ion concentrations per cm3
|Clear mountain air
|Just before a storm
|After a storm
|Typical office air
|A closed vehicle
As indicated in the table the air is dominated by positive ions (3 times as much) just before a storm. These circumstances are very unfavourable for all living creatures. Aggression is intensified, we are more susceptible for disease and accidents, more stupid mistakes occur and we tend toward irrational behaviour. The problems in people with psychiatric issues are amplified. This is something the psychiatrists agree upon.
It even gets worse when the situation is strengthened by a full moon; because the moon also influences the air’s ionization. Studies of the influence of positive ions show that 75% of the population is influenced by the presence of a relatively large amount of positive ions, whereas negative ions seemed to have a soothing effect on the same group of people. An analysis of 2,000 elementary schools showed that children got more active and aggressive just before a storm.
What is an ionizer?
An ionizer is an electrical machine for the production of negatively charged electrons called ions. Under the influence of electrical high voltage ions are created. These negatively charged ions will mostly bond to dust, germs of diseases and bacteria so that contamination of the air such as dust, cigarette smoke, pollen and fungi will be effectively thwarted. Not only will dust particles from the air be neutralised but also harmful gases such as formaldehyde, sulphur dioxide and hydrocarbon compounds. Thanks to the artificial ionization the natural concentration of negative ions will be restored. An ionizer generates between 20,000 and 200,000 ions per second. To warrant a correct concentration it is important that the relative humidity is between 45 and 60% with a temperature of about 20°C.
