Odors
Odour nuisance
Unpleasant odours can be annoying and negatively influence our health. Odour nuisance can lead to physical problems like headaches, nausea, respiratory dysfunctions and cardiac arrhythmias. But odours can also be at the origin of mental problems like for example tension, structural dissatisfaction with the living environment and a reduction in activities outside of the house.
The most straining odours are those associated with very unpleasant or dangerous situations. Some smells indeed indicate unhealthy substances (e.g. smell of solvent, cigarettes or exhaust gases).
Emissions
Emissions of companies can be defined as odour output (emission) of firms that spread in the air and generate odour nuisance in living environments. Odour emission means the amount of smell (odour unites per cubic meter air) that spreads in an odour sensitive object. The amount can be measured and calculated.
Outdoor odour sources
The main odour sources outside are: traffic, industry, agriculture, stables, deposits for fertilizers, houses with chimneys and/or furnaces.
Indoor odour sources
The main odour sources inside are: pets, garbage, kitchen smells, paint, tobacco, volatile organic compounds (VOC) which can develop within all sorts of household products, for example dyes, household cleaners, cosmetics, air fresheners and construction material, formaldehyde from construction materials, padding and carpets.
