Allergens
Allergens are substances that can provoke allergic reactions. An allergic reaction is caused when the immune system of the body reacts in a hypersensitive way to certain substances (allergens). Indoor allergens can come from amongst others dust mites, pets, mould and pollen.
Dust mites
Dust mites are located in (older) mattresses, upholstered furniture, carpets and on mouldy walls. The excrements of dust mites contain allergens.
Animal hair allergens
An allergy to animal hair is an allergic reaction that is caused by the contact with an animal. Pets spread hair and skin scales which are so light that they can hang in the air for days. Dog and cat hair allergies are the most common allergies against animal hair, but guinea pigs, rabbits and birds feathers can also cause them.
Mould
An allergy against mould can be detected through different ailments that are caused by the inhalation of mould spores. The symptoms of such an allergy are sneezing attacks, a runny nose, coughing and asthma.
Pollen
Pollen can be spread by the wind and represent the main problem for allergic persons since anemophilous plants often free big.
amounts of pollen into the air which is then disseminated across long distances through the wind and can be blown from the outside inside housings. Hence the pollen concentration can periodically be very high and can strongly impede the respiratory system of people suffering from this allergy.
Hay fever – a very common problem
Each year, hay fever season causes unpleasant ailments such as sneezing, a running nose and itchy eyes. Up to 20% of people suffer from allergic rhinitis whose most common form is called hay fever and starts at a very young age and represents an increasing trend.
Hay fever season is particularly unpleasant for asthma patients
Up to 80% of people which suffer from asthma also suffer from allergies such as hay fever. Unfortunately for asthma patients, these are not the only ailments they suffer from. Because asthma and hay fever are closely connected, asthma patients do not only suffer from hay fever but experience an increase in asthma symptoms. The nose and the lungs form our respiratory system. When our upper respiratory tract is irritated by pollen, it can influence the lungs and aggravate asthma problems. The combination of asthma and allergies is often underestimated.
At the same time spring means the kick-off of hay fever season and the first pollen (birch, oak, hornbeam, hazel tree and alder) fly around. People with a pollen allergy know about these problems and avoid to go outside if their work permits it.
