What is dust?

Dust is a collective term for all types of particles that are easily carried in an air flow. Dust can consist of solid particles. If those particles are created by combustion, it is called smoke. Liquid particles floating in the air are called mist.

House dust consists of a combination of small solid particles. House dust varies from house to house. House dust is a collection of micro-fine particles of disintegrated matter. Examples include human and animal dander, paper, micro-fine pieces of textile, human and animal hair, natural material, dirt and much more. House dust can be almost anything and arises anywhere. Indoor and outdoor. In the home, dust not only causes great annoyance for many people, but can also threaten health. Even a small airflow or vortex created by movement disperses dust through a room.

How is dust created?

The skin of house dwellers releases millions of flakes each day, which swirl through the air. Flakes and hair from pets like dogs and cats also create dust. In addition, dust contains millions of fibres from our clothes, furniture, curtains, bedding, carpets, mats, books and packaging. Dust also comes from outside in the form of grains of sand, animal fibres and grit. And dust contains droppings of insects and dust mites. House dust mites are microscopic animals that feed on people's dander and certain components of the dust. People are exposed to chemicals that can attach to house dust. These include lead, cadmium, plasticisers and flame retardants.

The health risks of house dust

The settled dust in the house forms a breeding ground for small life forms and micro-organisms such as bacteria and mould. Bacteria and mould feed on the dust particles, threatening the health of the residents. This creates an increasing risk of allergies caused by house dust mites or health problems resulting from mould in the home. Research has shown that house dust smaller than 0.06 millimetres and fine dust smaller than 10 micrometres can cause damage if it enters the lungs in excessive quantities. This particularly threatens the quality of life of people with respiratory diseases or cardiovascular disease: young children are also affected.

Particulate matter

Particulate matter is a collective term for air pollution with particles small enough to be inhaled and cause damage in the lungs and airways. This can lead to diseases such as asthma. Particulate matter in the home often comes from several sources. The main source of particulate matter (mainly PM10; particles of about 10 micrometres in size) in the indoor environment is tobacco smoke. In addition, particulate matter comes from the fireplace, baking and frying, vacuuming, car traffic-related air pollution and other transportation sources such as aviation and shipping, from commercial sources such as industry and livestock, and from recreational sources such as fireworks and wood smoke.

Dust and asthma

The interior space has become the typical abode for modern man. It’s the place we often spend as much as 90 percent of our time. A human being breathes in and out an average of 18,000 to 24,000 times a day. This means that an adult of average size breathes in about 20 cubic metres of air. This air volume corresponds to a weight of approximately 25 kilograms. This greatly exceeds the amount of food and drinking water consumed each day. While food and water can be carefully selected, this is generally not possible with the air we breathe.

And every time, we breathe in dust. Our bodies are built to get rid of that dust, but people with asthma are prone to getting sick from dust. Regular and thorough house cleaning works preventively.

The quality of the indoor air we breathe is important for our health and well-being. The less dust and fewer allergens, micro-organisms and chemical contaminants we breathe in, the lower the risk of becoming sick.

Clean Air Optima® air purifiers with high-end TRUE
HEPA filter technology, rid indoor space of
pathogenic house dust

The high efficiency of the Clean Air Optima® air purifiers with TRUE HEPA filter ensures optimally filtered and therefore clean breathing air, and improved health and well-being.

Clean Air Optima® high-end TRUE HEPA filter technology against house dust

Pre-filters capture large dust particles and lint.

TRUE HEPA filters, filter class H13 with nano silver coating, purify micro-fine particles up to 0.3 micrometres (0.3 µm) from the air with 99.97% efficiency, Mould 100%, Tobacco smoke 98.90%.

Activated carbon filters in the Clean Air Optima® air purifiers are composed of a honeycomb structure containing activated and specially treated carbon which adsorbs gases and unpleasant odours.

UV-C Lamps in the Clean Air Optima® air purifiers use the lamp's ultraviolet light (UV-C radiation) with a wavelength of 254 nm to kill harmful micro-organisms such as: germs, viruses and Covid-19 aerosols, mould (spores) and bacteria. What’s more, micro-organisms that have collected in the device are destroyed. This prevents them from multiplying and being distributed through the airflow in the room. Of all light rays, UV-C light has the highest frequency and shortest wavelength and therefore also contains the highest amount of energy which, through its radiation, penetrates the organism's outer membrane and destroys the DNA. With thousands of units of this type installed worldwide, the integrated UV-C technology has proven UV-C radiation to be highly effective against pathogenic and corona viruses, bacteria and single-cell organisms. By applying UV-C light, microbiological inactivation rates of 99.99% and higher can be achieved.

Powerful ozone-free ionisers disperse negative ions throughout the room, thereby removing pollutants from indoor air, rendering bacteria and viruses harmless, and neutralising odours. The negative ions attach themselves to dust particles, micro-organisms, pollen, mould and other undesired substances in the air and bind them together. In this way, the particles become heavier than the air and fall down or are filtered from the air by the air purifier.

Unique product range

The unique product range includes Clean Air Optima® high-end SMART air purifiers with ultra-quiet operation, an energy-efficient design and a sensor-controlled 6-way DUAL Airflow system also in a larger size: 2 Pre-filters, 2 TRUE HEPA H13 filters, 2 Activated Carbon filters, 2 UV-C lamps and 2 ionisers. As a result, these effective Clean Air Optima® mobile air purifiers can purify up to almost 100 percent of all harmful substances, house dust, particulate matter, gases, vapours and unpleasant odours, allergy triggers, bacteria, viruses and Covid-19 aerosols from contaminated indoor air.

The digital monitoring of the SMART air purifiers provides automatic and precise feedback on the current air quality in the indoor area where the Clean Air Optima® high-end SMART air purifier is installed by measuring the PM2.5 level, temperature and humidity in this room.
